From humble beginnings in 1954 to one of Wales' leading machinery dealers — the Hopkins story.
The Hopkins name has been synonymous with agricultural and groundcare machinery for over 70 years. What started as one man's passion for the industry has grown into a group of specialist companies serving customers from local farmers to the European Tour and Ryder Cup.
Edwin Hopkins (Ted) first became involved in the agricultural machinery business. His deep knowledge of farming, equipment and the needs of rural communities would lay the foundation for everything that followed.
Ted and his son Christopher officially established Ted Hopkins Ltd, building the business from their base in Newport, South Wales. The company focused on tractors, farm equipment and groundcare machinery — forging relationships with leading manufacturers from day one.
Recognising the growing demand for equipment hire, the family launched Tractor Hire Ltd and Buggy Hire UK in the same year. From a small start, Buggy Hire UK would go on to become the preferred supplier for the European Tour, Ryder Cup, Celtic Manor Resort, Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff City.
The business expanded beyond its original agricultural focus into groundcare, construction, ATVs, utility vehicles and golf buggies. Operations grew to serve customers across Wales, the Midlands and South West England from the 10-acre headquarters in Newport.
The group became authorised dealers and approved regional franchise holders for major manufacturers including Kubota, Toro, Club Car, Stihl, Kawasaki and Kramer — offering genuine parts, trained technicians and full after-sales support.
Telehandler UK was established to provide specialist hire and sales of telehandlers and 4x4 forklifts. The company quickly built a reliable reputation, serving clients from the European Tour to the Principality Stadium.
Hopkins Machinery was created as the umbrella brand, linking Ted Hopkins Ltd, Tractor Hire Ltd, Buggy Hire UK and Telehandler UK under one identity. The new company took responsibility for promotion, advertising and coordination across the group.
The group expanded further with a branch in Kilcot, Gloucestershire, strengthening coverage across the region. Today, Hopkins Machinery operates from three branches with a team of manufacturer-trained technicians, fully equipped workshops and a fleet of mobile service vans.
Hopkins Machinery continues to grow, investing in new technology, expanding our product range and maintaining the family values and personal service that have been at the heart of the business for over 70 years. From local groundsmen to international sporting events — we're proud to be your machinery partner.
